Joe Thompson a local farmer went to Gloucester market with two items to sell, his Newfoundland dog & his wife.
They had been married for three years.
I think his sales pitch should have been better, he told the market day crowd;
“She has been a born serpent, I took her for the good of my home, but she has become my tormenter”.
“A domestic curse. A nightly invasion & a daily devil”.
He then offered some advice;
“Avoid women as you would a mad dog, a roaring lion, a loaded pistol, cholera, Mount Etna & any other pestilent thing in nature”.
But he did add that she can read & milk cows!
Henry Mears, a gentleman from the city paid Joe 28 shillings for the dog & the wife.
