36 skeletons discovered

Excavations took place at Belas Knap long barrow near Winchcome, in the Gloucestershire Cotswolds.

Belas Knap is one of the finest examples of a certain type of burial mound called the Cotswold/Severn.

This type of mound is only found in the Cotswolds & along the side of the river Severn.

It was greatly restored in the 1930’s.

Its 170ft long, has a forecourt (believed to have been where ceremonies were performed), & a false entrance.

The burials are in chambers along the side of the mound.

Its believed to date back to 1500 bc.

36 ancient skeletons were found along with flint tools & broken pottery.

It is now cared for by English Heritage.
