15th of July is ST Swithun’s day!

St Swithun was Bishop of Winchester & really loved the rain.

He loved it so much that asked that when he died he wanted to be buried outside, rather than inside the minster like the other Bishops.

It came to pass that Swithun died, & was buried outside so the sweet rain could fall upon his grave.

After he was canonised the monks decided that he should be removed & placed inside the Cathedral choir on the 15th July, 971.

Swithun was so upset at this that the sky did weep for forty days.

St Swithun’s shrine can still be seen inside Winchester Cathedral.

“St Swithun’s day, If thou dost rain, for forty days it will remain”.
